About Stitch~N~Thimble
Stitch~N~Thimble started back about 3 generations in family. My great grandmother taught my grandmother and my grandmother taught me. It started earlier than I can remember but my grandmother has told me remembrance stories since I was 3.
I would stay with her and my grandfather on weekends, holidays and most of the summer down in Pennsylvania in a cozy log home that the entire family built. I loved to help her lay out fabric, then match pieces together so she could hand sew them together. She would talk to me about what she was doing and why/how she was putting the pieces together. We would then lay the blocks out in a pattern and she would sew the blocks together on her tredle sewing machine to create quilt tops. She would put the quilt top, middle and backing together on a quilting loom. As she would quilt the pieces together, she would talk and explain how to put it together. I would thread her needles for her as she would quilt beautiful designs into the "quilt sandwich" for hours and hours.
My first time sewing of pieces was when I was about 5. I went through her scrap closet and chose fabric very carefully so as to match the colors up. It was a scrappy quilt top made from extra fabric scraps with flannel pieced backing from my grandfathers worn down flannel shirts and jackets with a heart quilting design. I very much cherish that quilt and the time we spent making it. It’s been very loved, but now has a place in my heart and is stored in a safe place with many memories.
Over the years grandma took me to quilting bees and Amish neighbors taught me hands on about quilting and making beautiful quilts. I always loved to hear the stories of what all the different quilts, colors and designs meant to each family or person they were meant for...being a wedding quilt, a gift for a friend or loved one or for sale or auction. I furthered my education by classes, tutorials, books and magazines about quilting and creating quilts for friends and family.
My husband and I have been married for 21 years and he has always been very interested in this passion of mine and how far back it stemmed. The first time he met my grandmother she showed him quilts she had made and some we created together. She took to him very fast and we enjoyed the times we spent together.
Tim always prodded me towards the long arm machines when we would frequent Quilt Show. He always reminded me how I would be able to finish quilts much faster and enjoy more time sewing and creating the tops. I was so excited when we were able to finance a Gammill Long Arm Machine and the Statler Stitcher, it was a dream come true. Hubby was very interested and so he learned right along with me how to run it. Every day the two of us spend time together making magic happen with our 2 Long Arm Machines!
